Superbly Situated” by Robert Hershon

you politely ask me not to die and i promise not to
right from the beginning—a relationship based on
good sense and thoughtfulness in little things

i would like to be loved for such simple attainments
as breathing regularly and not falling down too often
or because my eyes are brown or my father left-handed

and to be on the safe side i wouldn’t mind if somehow
i became entangled in your perception of admirable objects
so you might say to yourself: i have recently noticed

how superbly situated the empire state building is
how it looms up suddenly behind cemeteries and rivers
so far away you could touch it—therefore i love you

part of me fears that some moron is already plotting
to tear down the empire state building and replace it
with a block of staten island mother/daughter houses

just as part of me fears that if you love me for my cleanliness
i will grow filthy if you admire my elegant clothes
i’ll start wearing shirts with sailboats on them

but i have decided to become a public beach an opera house
a regularly scheduled flight—something that can’t help being
in the right place at the right time—come take your seat

we’ll raise the curtain fill the house start the engines
fly off into the sunrise, the spire of the empire state
the last sight on the horizon as the earth begins to curve

You have done it by being yourself.

Under Construction: Mental Nights

Things I learned today: Sauternes are made by letting the grapes rot with a very specific kind of fungus. That’s what gives the wine that honeysuckled flavour (and some of its other distinctives - peaches, quince, etc…)

Just fyi. You were drinking ‘noble rot’ last night.

Hm, homemade curry, rice, naan, brownies (very peculiar yet delicious brownies) and daal. Followed by a couple hours of prayer and playing praise music as background in a beautiful chapel. Followed by a visit to some friends that resulted in a glass of 1988 Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey (HOLY CRAP IT…

the cleaned up jars of clay version of this was a constant loop through some tough months… this is even more heart renderingly beautiful.

And His blood? it still hasn’t failed me. Never failed me yet.

I’m so far out of the loop, definitely one of the later people to hear about this.

But I don’t care because it’s amazing.

And must be shared :)

Aside from being touching and speaking the truth, it is a brilliant and incredible composition.

All based around one tramp’s singing about Jesus never failing him.

Here’s the Story from the composer’s site:

“In 1971, when I lived in London, I was working with a friend, Alan Power, on a film about people living rough in the area around Elephant and Castle and Waterloo Station. In the course of being filmed, some people broke into drunken song - sometimes bits of opera, sometimes sentimental ballads - and one, who in fact did not drink, sang a religious song “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet”. This was not ultimately used in the film and I was given all the unused sections of tape, including this one.

When I played it at home, I found that his singing was in tune with my piano, and I improvised a simple accompaniment. I noticed, too, that the first section of the song - 13 bars in length - formed an effective loop which repeated in a slightly unpredictable way. I took the tape loop to Leicester, where I was working in the Fine Art Department, and copied the loop onto a continuous reel of tape, thinking about perhaps adding an orchestrated accompaniment to this. The door of the recording room opened on to one of the large painting studios and I left the tape copying, with the door open, while I went to have a cup of coffee. When I came back I found the normally lively room unnaturally subdued. People were moving about much more slowly than usual and a few were sitting alone, quietly weeping.

I was puzzled until I realised that the tape was still playing and that they had been overcome by the old man’s singing. This convinced me of the emotional power of the music and of the possibilities offered by adding a simple, though gradually evolving, orchestral accompaniment that respected the tramp’s nobility and simple faith. Although he died before he could hear what I had done with his singing, the piece remains as an eloquent, but understated testimony to his spirit and optimism.”

I surrender to the safety
of Your nail pierced hands.
I surrender to the path
of Your blood stained feet.

Cause Your hands were pierced for me,
and Your feet they bled for me,
and You suffered just to claim me.

You have claimed me for Your kingdom
You have claimed me for Your glory
I am Yours
I am Yours
I am Yours

I belong to You
I belong to You
I belong to You
my Lord.

“The reality emerging out of the Exodus is not just a new religion or a new religious idea or a vision of freedom but the emergence of a new social community in history, a community that has historical body, that had to devise laws, patterns of governance and order, norms of right and wrong, and sanctions of accountability. The participants in the Exodus found themselves, undoubtedly surprisingly to them, involved in the intentional formation of a new social community to match the vision of God’s freedom.”

I am not your average person, I think sometimes, experiencing this in shades of gray. No, I am all on days vs off days, waking up uncertain of whether today I will emerge victorious or begging for mercy. So many days end with such need for forgiveness. Praying in tongues because my mind can’t find the words to communicate the pain and shame that have taken up residence in my heart. Pure emotion rips forth, and the promise is remembered.

Here is the great lie the enemy tries to feed me. He offers it to you as well, and its attractive the way rainy days are comforting when your world is falling apart. He says, “This is how you will be forever. You will never conquer this. You will not change. You will be just like this forever.”

What happens when we give in? The great compromise. The slow decaying of our healthy living, the mark that we keep moving back just a few more centimeters. Godly discipline seems anathema this place, and yet so often it is part of the solution.

Healthy living requires healthy hearts. Healthy hearts require healthy living. One cannot exist without the other, and so often it seems hopeless. How can we change, if we force ourselves to be better?

And then grace steps in.

Over me, over me
I’m your soul too
You’re over me
Over me, over me
So speak your word and
Heal the pain
You’re coming with
Seal of faith
I believe, I believe
And you marvel over me
Maker of the galaxy, marveling
Overcome, overcome
All my enemies are overrun
I believe , I believe
And you marvel over me
Maker of the galaxy, marveling
Oh, I believe, I believe
And you marvel over me
Maker of the galaxy, marveling
A father to the fatherless
Defender of the loneliness
You rescue my soul
You lifted your own
Solidarity to family
Unbinding those in prosperity
You water my soul
You poured out your own
I believe, I believe
And you marvel over me
Maker of the galaxy, marveling
Oh I believe, I believe
And you marvel over me
Maker of the galaxy, marveling

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. http://bible.us/2Pet1.3.NIV

Praying for IRENE.

Dear Friends,

I don’t know what you’ve seen on the news, but here in the northeast of the US, we’re poised to be hit by a hurricane. Coastal areas in New Jersey, and waterfront areas of NYC have been evacuated, as the government takes steps to ensure safety. For our area this is a once in a lifetime event, and follows close on the heels of a very rare earthquake that hit DC and NYC last week.

These are not catastrophic events on the scale that is seen in many other regions of the world, but I believe they are significant, and so I am asking, would you please spare some time to pray?

Pray for the least of these - those to whom property is not wealth, but rather necessary for life. Pray for the homeless and vulnerably housed. Pray for those who do not have a sound relational network that affords them somewhere safe to go, and pray for safety and community and JESUS in the shelters. Pray that those who call upon the name of the Lord would be saved - that they would find themselves protected and provided for tangibly (to the extent of a clear demarcation of damage/wall of protection), that they might see the unfailing love of the Lord in action.

I feel that Psalm 107 is very significant for this event. Pray this psalm over the area?

Also, specifically, please pray for David, and his home in Wildwood, NJ.

On a more spiritual/less practical level:

I am seeing a physical shaking up (earthquake), battering (hurricane), and (hopefully) rebuilding, and praying for this in a spiritual way in this area as well. I think it’s worth noting that these events are affecting the political center (DC) and the economic center (NYC) of this country (one of the major evacuation areas is the financial district).

— a shaking up, tearing down, and rebuilding of the allegiances of people in this area. that they would turn their hearts towards the Lord, and away from wealth and material things and power (even patriotism/nationalism and the worship of country?), and towards Him.

— I also feel it is necessary to pray the same thing of the Church, and of individual Christians in the NY metro area - that their allegiances and priorities would be realigned. That their hearts would be turned away from wealth, and power, and worldly influence, and towards JESUS, spiritual stature, and holiness. Renew the desire to seek God’s face at all costs.

God’s love is stronger than a flood come to wash away all that we worship until we have eyes only for him!

Please feel free to forward to anyone who might spare a prayer, and I thank you for your continued faithfulness- you are all blessings to me, and what a great joy to have such people in my life that I can reach out to in any and every situation to fight alongside me in a spiritual way.

I am safe, at home with my family. We’ve spent the last 24 hours securing the house, but don’t expect any major damage. We are far from the coastline, and are not too low lying. Hoping to still be able to return to the uk on Wednesday, and looking forward to seeing many of you then.

With love,Helen

ps feel free to forward to anyone you know who would be interested in praying for this area this weekend.
